Week 7
Once again, this week has been full of learning, fun and laughter in our centres.
This week’s theme was Food and Drink, and the children had many opportunities to develop their vocabulary and language patterns through interactive activities such as singing, role-play, language games and drama. These activities created natural opportunities for the children to use Welsh in meaningful contexts and build their confidence in communication.
New Welsh food vocabulary was introduced through practical experiences, alongside opportunities to learn about St David’s Day celebrations.
The children took part in a “Do you like...?” tasting session, where they sampled a variety of fruits and foods while responding to the question “Do you like...?”. They were encouraged to say what they liked and disliked using the new language patterns:
- “I like... because it is...”
- “I don’t like... because it is...”
There was plenty of laughter as the children tried different flavours, with lots of funny faces appearing when tasting fresh lemon juice or grapefruit! The session was a lively and enjoyable way to practise Welsh while exploring a variety of foods. Some of the children were even keen to repeat the activity with more fruits!
During the numeracy session, the children learned new terms such as pounds, pence and total, while creating shopping lists. They also enjoyed role-playing in Deli Aberwla, taking turns as customers and shopkeepers, using Welsh to discuss prices and calculate money in practical situations.
In drama sessions, the children performed a humorous dialogue called “The Naughty Ghosts”, where ghosts tried to scare everyone in Aberwla’s General Store. This provided an opportunity to use imagination and spoken Welsh in a theatrical context.
The children also enjoyed an interactive session learning about the Five Senses in Welsh, focusing on seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling. They had opportunities to guess what was inside a mystery box, encouraging curiosity and careful observation. Throughout these activities, they also learned and practised sequencing words and commands, using them naturally while tasting foods, playing games and following instructions.
Another highlight of the week was our visit to the library at the Language Centre on the site of Ysgol Eifionydd. The children had the opportunity to explore a range of Welsh books, browse the shelves and choose books that interested them. The visit was a valuable opportunity to develop a love of reading, expand vocabulary and use Welsh in a natural context. The children enjoyed listening to stories, discussing books together and sharing their favourite books with friends.
The children also enjoyed a second special session with Geth Tomos, which provided a fantastic opportunity to use Welsh in a creative and engaging way. The learners worked together to create music and songs that included the new language patterns introduced over recent weeks. The session encouraged the children to use their new vocabulary confidently, develop their speaking skills and express their ideas through music. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking part, and there was great enthusiasm and creativity during the composing and performing process.
To finish the week, the children worked together to prepare a colourful fruit salad, using their new vocabulary to create and follow instructions while preparing food – a lively, fun and natural way to practise Welsh!
Thank you to everyone for their enthusiasm and effort this week. We are looking forward to another exciting week ahead!
