Welcome Message
Welcome to the Gwynedd Immersion Centres website.
What is the Immersion Education Scheme?
It is a specialist service provided by Gwynedd Council to support children who have moved to live in Gwynedd to learn Welsh in a natural and rapid way.
Pupils attend an immersion centre for a period of 10 weeks, where they receive education through the medium of Welsh in a supportive, practical and enjoyable environment.
Aims and Key Objectives
-
To support new learners of Welsh to master the language and to be able to participate fully in bilingual education.
-
To help pupils to join bilingual education confidently in their home school after the immersion period.
Organisation of the Scheme
There are 6 immersion centres across Gwynedd serving different areas of the county.
These include:
-
3 primary immersion centres for pupils in Years 2–4 (ages 6–9)
-
3 transition immersion centres for pupils in Years 5–9 (ages 9–14)
The programme focuses on developing Welsh speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through practical, creative activities and full immersion in the language.
During the immersion period, pupils usually spend four days a week at the immersion centre and one day at their home school.
After the immersion period, they return full-time to their home school with ongoing support to continue developing their Welsh.
How to Apply
If you are a parent or guardian of a child who is new to Welsh and living in Gwynedd, you can contact your child’s school to make enquiries about our provision.
The school will arrange the referral process and explain the timescale, transport arrangements, and post-immersion support.
