Week 3

Welcome to the Language Centres’ weekly blog.

Highlights of the Week

This week was full of fun learning and creative activities, with the enjoyment continuing throughout Week 3. The children learned to name parts of the body through songs and outdoor chalk activities. By moving with the rhythms, they developed their vocabulary in a fun and engaging way while enjoying the learning process.

One of the highlights of the week was a fun music workshop with Geth Tomos at Tryfan Language Centre and Maesincla Language Centre. The children had the opportunity to sing, move and enjoy music, developing their confidence and language skills in a lively and creative way.

The children also had the opportunity to learn clothing vocabulary and use language patterns in a variety of interesting contexts. During the ‘Shopping Bag’ activity, they followed instructions to dress characters. They also took part in role-play, practising buying a hat in a shop and using relevant language patterns in a realistic situation. In addition, each child planned and designed outfits for their own characters – a great way to encourage creativity and develop the ability to follow step-by-step instructions.

The children were introduced to the imaginary town of Aberwla, where they practised their language skills by learning about two characters, Aron and Beca. They were encouraged to describe the characters’ personalities and features, further developing their descriptive language.

During numeracy sessions, the children played number games to practise their calculation skills in a fun and interactive way, reinforcing basic mathematical terminology.

In addition, pupils at Porthmadog Language Centre enjoyed outdoor learning, focusing on farm animals and nature vocabulary. This provided a great opportunity to connect language with the world around them, making learning meaningful and practical.

Descriptive language was further reinforced as the children learned how to record their spoken work on an app, giving each child a voice as a character. This provided a valuable opportunity to practise communication skills and build confidence when speaking in a fun and imaginative context.

In the Primary and Secondary Transition Centres, one of the week’s highlights was using virtual reality (VR) technology to take a virtual tour around Tyddyn Swnllyd Farm, adding an exciting element to the learning experience.

It has been a week full of fun, learning and creativity, with continuous opportunities for the children to develop and apply their language skills further.
