Blog - Week 6

This week, the learners focused on developing their Welsh language skills by using new vocabulary and language patterns while discussing different places in the community.

Highlights of the Week

Throughout the week, the learners developed their understanding of buildings and familiar places within the community. Through a variety of activities, they had opportunities to use new vocabulary and language patterns while discussing locations, giving directions and following directions. The learners also practised using the language patterns “There is...” and “There isn’t...” when talking about different places and facilities. They had many opportunities to use these patterns in a range of activities, describing what could be seen in buildings and public places.

As part of this week’s work, learners from Canolfan Iaith Eifionydd, Porthmadog visited the local leisure centre. While exploring the building, they used Welsh to discuss the different facilities and their locations. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to reinforce the vocabulary and language patterns learned in class in a real-life context. They also had the opportunity to order a hot chocolate in Welsh in the café before returning to the language centre.

Learners from the other language centres had the opportunity to explore their local town and community. They learned about different locations and the Welsh names for buildings, providing a valuable opportunity to use Welsh beyond the classroom.

During the week, the learners were introduced to two new characters, Ceri Caradog and Cled, as well as Jeff the dog. Through a variety of activities, they learned new vocabulary and developed their speaking skills through enjoyable drama sessions and character description activities.

In our VR session, the learners visited Ceri Caradog’s garage in the virtual world. Following the visit, they reported back on their experiences in Welsh using the new vocabulary and language patterns learned during the week. This provided a valuable opportunity to develop their confidence in speaking and using Welsh in a meaningful context.

As part of their creative work, the learners designed a new gadget for Cled’s gadget shop. They then described their inventions in Welsh using appropriate vocabulary and full sentences. This activity was an excellent way to combine creativity with language development.

During art sessions, the learners created artwork inspired by their local area and the places that are important to them, while exploring the work of artist Rhiannon Roberts. The finished pieces were colourful and creative, reflecting the learners’ ideas and individuality.

It is wonderful to see the learners using more and more Welsh every day. We are extremely proud of their efforts, progress and enthusiasm for learning.
