Blog – Week 4
Welcome to the fourth week in the language centres!
The pupils have been taking part in fun activities with continuous opportunities to build confidence in Welsh and to develop their language skills across the curriculum.
Weekly Highlights
At the beginning of the week, the learners focused on daily verbs and took part in practical activities and fun games to reinforce their understanding of these verbs.
This week, the children learned prepositions through practical activities, interactive games, and songs with actions. Each activity provided opportunities to learn through experience, enabling the children to explore the language and use it in a lively and practical way.
Alongside preposition games, a variety of speaking activities such as “Charades” and “Simon Says” were used to practise verbs. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed taking part in these activities, and listening to the “Tracks of the Week” also helped them recognise and understand verbs in context.
The pupils also enjoyed a special visit from Gethin Tomos during the week. Fun drumming sessions were held at Maesincla Language Centre and Porthmadog Language Centre, where the children learned and practised language patterns through rhythm and music. The sessions were lively and provided an excellent opportunity to develop speaking confidence in an enjoyable and practical way.
At Porthmadog Language Centre, the pupils also took part in outdoor learning activities, learning more about the local area while using the language pattern “I saw…” to describe what they had seen around them. These activities were a fantastic way to combine language learning with practical experiences and exploring the local community.
There was also another visit to Fferm Tyddyn Swnllyd in Aberwla this week, where the children met a new character, Wil Tomos. The pupils took part in board games and interactive games, as well as completing writing tasks to describe the character’s features. The drama session at the end of the week was a highlight for many, giving the children an opportunity to practise and perform drama in a supportive and enjoyable environment. The children also had the chance to learn the names of farm animals and wild animals.
During Mathematics lessons this week, the pupils were introduced to a new challenge — beginning to learn how to tell the time in Welsh. The children had great fun practising through the game “What’s the time, Mr Wolf?”, using large circles and numbers on the floor as a clock, while placing colourful blocks to represent numbers. These activities combined visual learning, physical movement, and counting, making learning about time fun, interactive, and practical.
The week was full of learning and valuable experiences for the pupils to develop their language, social, and thinking skills.
