Week 7

Highlights of the Week

This week has once again been full of learning, fun, and laughter in our centres.

Our theme for the week was food and drink, and the children had lots of opportunities to develop their vocabulary and language patterns through interactive activities such as singing, role play, language games, and drama. These activities created natural opportunities for the children to use Welsh in meaningful contexts and to build confidence in communicating.

The children were introduced to more new food words in Welsh through hands-on experiences, along with a chance to learn about St David’s Day celebrations.

They took part in a “Do you like…?” tasting session, where they sampled different fruits and foods, responding to the question “Do you like…?” and saying out loud what they liked and didn’t like using the new language patterns: “I like… because it’s…” or “I don’t like… because it’s…”. There was lots of laughter as the children tried different flavours, with funny faces appearing while tasting fresh lemon juice or a piece of fruit! The session was a lively and enjoyable way to practice Welsh while tasting a variety of foods, and some children were even eager to repeat the session with more fruit!

In the numeracy session, the children learned new terms such as pounds, coins, and total, and created shopping lists. They also had the opportunity to role play at Deli Aberwla, taking turns as customers and shopkeepers, using Welsh to discuss prices and calculate money in practical situations.

During the drama sessions, the children performed a fun dialogue called “Naughty Ghosts”, where ghosts tried to scare everyone in Bob Dim’s Shop, Aberwla, using their imagination and speaking Welsh in a theatrical context.

The children also had an interactive experience with the 5 Senses in Welsh, focusing on seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling, with opportunities to guess what was in the box, encouraging curiosity and attention to detail. During these activities, they also learned instructions and commands, using them naturally while tasting, playing games, and following directions.

To finish the week, the children prepared a colourful fruit salad together, using the new vocabulary to create and follow instructions while preparing the food – a lively, fun, and natural way to practice Welsh while exploring new flavours!

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm and effort this week. We are looking forward to next week!
